Spaghetti Meatballs: A Timeless Italian-American Delight

Spaghetti meatballs is a classic and comforting Italian-American dish that combines tender meatballs with perfectly cooked spaghetti, all smothered in a rich tomato sauce. It's a beloved favorite for its hearty flavors and satisfying combination of textures.

What is Spaghetti & Meatballs

Spaghetti meatballs, also known as spaghetti and meatballs, is an iconic Italian-American dish that has captured the hearts of food enthusiasts around the world. Its origin can be traced back to early 20th-century Italian immigrants in the United States, who brought their love for pasta and combined it with local ingredients.

The recipe typically involves creating succulent meatballs using a blend of ground beef or a combination of meats like pork and veal, along with breadcrumbs, eggs, Parmesan cheese, and a mix of aromatic herbs like basil and oregano. These meatballs are then simmered in a flavorful tomato-based sauce until tender and bursting with flavor.

To serve, the meatballs are ladled over al dente spaghetti, creating a hearty and comforting meal that is perfect for family gatherings or comforting weeknight dinners.

Variations of spaghetti meatballs can include substituting the meat with turkey or chicken for a lighter option, or using different types of pasta like penne or rigatoni for a twist. Additionally, the sauce can be personalized with added ingredients such as red pepper flakes, mushrooms, or even a splash of wine.

How to make Spaghetti & Meatballs

  1. We’ll start by making the mixture for the meatballs. For this add all the wet and dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl along with the chicken keema.
  2. Mix the ingredients together until well combined and the mixture is able to hold its shape when formed into small balls.
  3. Now we’ll make 1.5 inch balls from the mixture and place them in a well oiled dish.

Let the meatballs marinate for 30 minutes to 4 hours in a covered dish.

  1. Now to sear the meatballs, add 1 tablespoon of oil in a stainless steel pan. Start by placing the meatballs in the pan over medium heat and let them cook for 3 minutes on each side or until 90 percent cooked.
  2. Once the meatballs are done cooking, remove them from the pan and keep aside. In the same pan heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat and add the thinly sliced garlic.
  3. Once the garlic is slightly cooked add in the chili flakes and cook for 60-90 seconds. Add the tomato puree and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Now place the meatballs into the sauce and continue to cook for another 5 minutes or until the meatballs are fully cooked and the sauce is fully developed.
  5. Taste the sauce and add salt and pepper to taste. Finally garnish with finely chopped parsley and serve.

Expert Tips

  1. Make sure to use good quality chicken mince with at least 15-20 percent fat in it to get nice and juicy meatballs.
  2. Make sure to place the meatballs in a hot pan in order to seal in the juices and to avoid having dry or rubbery meatballs.
  3. Elevate your sauce by adding different flavors like bell peppers or olives into the mix.
  4. We would recommend using homemade tomato puree rather than a store bought one for a much fresher and natural flavor.
  5. Play with different garnishes to add different textures or flavors to your dish. Try using different types of cheeses or pickled/fresh olives.
