Thankuni is a creeping plant that belongs to the family Apiaceae and has a few different names. It is related to herbs like parsley and cilantro, which are more well-known. It is also called by its scientific name, Centella asiatica, which is the same as pennywort. Even though it has become naturalised in other parts of the world, it is mostly found in Southeast Asia and likes moist and muggy places. People in some parts of the world also call thankuni "gotu kola."

 

Some parts of the name may sound like they have something to do with the kola nut, but the kola nut, which is used to flavour cola drinks, comes from a different plant.

 

 

 

 

Uses of Thankuni:

This spice has been used for hundreds of years by both Indians and Chinese. In Ayurveda, it is seen as a kind of medicine for anxiety. In old Sanskrit texts, thankuni is mentioned as a treatment for both heart disease and respiratory illnesses like bronchitis. Chinese rumours from far and wide say that a cultivator who burned through thankuni lived for more than 250 years. In traditional Chinese medicine, the spice is still used. When people in Sri Lanka saw that elephants seemed to be drawn to Thankuni, it became popular there too. People know that elephants live a long time.

 

Recently, thankuni has gotten a lot of attention because of the popularity of certain "nootropics" that help people think more clearly. Many people in the West know about this present spice because it is thought to help the mind work better.

 

Is thankuni and parsley the same?

Thankuni is related to parsley, so it has a lot of the same qualities. It looks like a mix of watercress and parsley. It also tastes a bit like parsley, with a hint of sharpness and a little bit of a cooling effect.
