Origin of Kesar mangoes
Kesar mangoes came from Junagadh, which is a busy town in Gujarat near the coast. Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai grew the first plant of this mango in Vanthali in 1931.
After that, about 75 grafts of this variety were grown at the Junagadh Laal Dori farm, which is at the base of Mount Girnar.
How did Kesar mango get its name?
In 1934, the Nawab of Junagadh, Muhammad Mahabat Khan III, said, "This is Kesar," as he looked at the mango fruit's beautiful orange flesh. Kesar in Hindi and Gujarati means "saffron."
So, the mango became known as Kesar.
Kesar mango has GI label:
Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Ltd. was the first to suggest giving Gir Kesar mangoes the GI label (GAIC). In 2010, the Junagadh Agricultural University put in a similar request.
The GI tag was given to Gir Kesar mangoes in 2011 after they were registered in Chennai.
Now, only the Gir area of Gujarat has the name "Gir Kesar." So, Kesar mangoes are the first agricultural product from the state of Gujarat and the second mango variety in all of India to get the GI label. The Dasheri mango from Uttar Pradesh is the first type to get a GI tag.
